May Brings Pre-Summer Fun to San Diego

It’s one of San Diego’s many wonderful times of year: May! We’ve had a little bit of rain to freshen our Spring flowers, warmer (and shorter) evenings now that daylight savings time is well entrenched and abundant sunshine – a perfect respite before the arrival of what can sometimes be San Diego’s own flavor of June Gloom. It’s an ideal time to take advantage of some of the pre-summer activities that are unique to our local area. Be sure to dive in!

Weekend of May 10 – 13, 2018

Gator by the Bay – Zydeco, Blues & Crawfish Festival – Paid Entrance
Point Loma Peninsula, Spanish Landing Park, 3900 North Harbor Dr. , San Diego, CA 92101
San Diego hosts the largest authentic Louisiana-themed festival this side of the bayou. Four big days of live music featuring more than 100 performances on 7 stages, not to mention dancing, amazing Southern food like beignets, gumbo, jambalaya & 10,000 lbs of crawfish. This is a very well-organized, well-behaved gathering that’s suitable for all family members.

Ocean Beach Kite Festival – FREE
Dusty Rhodes Park, Sunset Cliffs Blvd. at Nimitz, San Diego, CA 92107
A free family fun event featuring building and decorating, prizes, professional kite flier, kite demonstrations and games, crafters, community organizations, gourmet food, carnival activities, and live music.

Gray Whale Migration – through the end of May
San Diego Whale Watch, Seaforth Sportfishing, 171 Quivira Road, San Diego, CA 92109
The Gray Whale makes the most spectacular and longest mass migration of any marine mammal. San Diego is uniquely positioned along their migration route from the summer feeding grounds in the Bering Sea to the winter grounds of the Baja California for excellent opportunities for whale spotting. We’re coming up on the end of their migration period through the month of May, catch a glimpse while you can!

May 19 – 20

Pirate Days at the San Diego Maritime Museum
1492 N Harbor Dr, San Diego, CA 92101
The Maritime Museum presents “BOARDED! A New Pirate Adventure” aboard the Californian. Pirate Days, a two-day celebration for kids of all ages, includes kids costume contests, cannon firings, weapon demonstrations, sword fights, scary stories, and a scavenger hunt for Pirate Treasure. The first 100 children each day receive a free Pirate Booty Bag while supply lasts. Great family fun along our stunning San Diego Embarcadero.

Fiesta del Sol in Solana Beach – FREE
Fletcher Cove, Solana Beach, 92075
The 39th Annual Fiesta del Sol is a FREE 2-day arts & music festival that serves as a kick-off to summer in this beautiful north county coastal community. Featuring an exciting lineup of local talent, Fiesta del Sol also offers local food, craft bevies, a large, fun, and exciting children’s area set up for families to enjoy rides, games, a climbing wall and more.

Fiesta Botanica – Celebrating Balboa Park’s Plants & Gardens
Balboa Park, 10am – 3pm
Celebrate spring in Balboa Park amid the region’s most spectacular historical gardens at Fiesta Botanica. This family-friendly festival kicks off at 10:00 AM with a floral Wagon Parade along El Prado and continues with horticultural-themed lectures and demonstrations, hands-on activities for kids, live entertainment, tours of the park’s historic gardens, majestic butterfly releases, open-air sketching stations, plant sales, and food trucks.

Veterans Wreath Remembrance Ceremony
USS Midway Museum, San Diego Embarcadero, 9 – 10am
Honoring veterans from World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War & the Global War on Terrorism, this inspirational ceremony for all ages emphasizes the 65th anniversary of the end of the Korean War. There will be a featured speaker – RADM Yancy Lindsey, Commanding Officer, Navy Region Southwest – plus a flyover, live inspirational music, audience participation and more. Event attendees who arrive by 9:30 a.m. receive free admission to the museum following the ceremony.

Balboa Park Summer Kickoff & Concert – the Park’s Official Start to Special Summer Activities and Hours featuring performances by the Park’s resident San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory
Plaza de Panama, 4pm – 8:15pm
Friday June 1st is the first evening of the Park’s summertime Food Truck Fridays as well as Park After Dark, with select museums and attractions open late-night hours from 5:00 – 8:00 pm on summer Friday nights. This family-friendly evening of music, food, festival atmosphere and fun will get your summer season off on the right foot as Balboa Park celebrates its 150th Anniversary. Don’t miss the open-air classical music concert featuring orchestras from Balboa Park’s resident youth music program, San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory performing excerpts and selections from Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, Rimsky-Korsakov’s Procession of the Nobles, Shostakovich’s Galop, and more. There’ll be seating and picnic tables in the Plaza, all the better to enjoy your Food Truck delights while listening to the concert. Or bring a blanket and a picnic and enjoy this FREE and festive celebration of all things summer!
