Fun & Unique Ways to Get Around San Diego

In the not-so-distant past it was hard to find anyone who visited San Diego and didn’t insist that having access to a car was an absolute necessity. With the advent of options like ridesharing and dockless bikes those days can seem long gone! Not only does San Diego have new alternatives for getting from Point A to Point B, we have a wide variety of fun forms of transport that can help you enjoy the scenery, get some exercise, or see the sights. Here’s a list to consider:

Uber and Lyft
Although they almost need no mention, its helpful to know that central San Diego has a major Uber and Lyft presence. Waiting times for a driver within 1 – 5 miles of Alcazar Court can be under 5 minutes and our overall attitude regarding both services is very positive.

Dockless Bikes and Scooters
Dockless bikes station-free ridesharing bicycles and scooters, have descended on San Diego with roughly 4,000 units currently in the city of San Diego alone. There are at least four dockless bike companies operating in San Diego and one offering motorized scooters:

  • LimeBike (bright green and yellow bikes, green and white scooters)
  • Mobike (silver and orange bikes)
  • Ofo (yellow and black bikes)
  • Spin (orange and black bikes)
  • Bird (black and white scooters)

Remember that California law requires bicycle riders under 18 to wear a helmet. San Diego and the dockless bicycle companies encourage all riders to wear a helmet at all times, but they don’t provide one. Bird scooter riders must wear a helmet at all times. The company offers free helmets which users can request through the mobile app. Electric bicycles and scooters are not allowed on sidewalks, however non-electric bicycles are OK to use on sidewalks in most cities.

Hillcrest Lunch Loop Shuttle
The Lunch Loop is a FREE lunchtime shuttle service financed by the Uptown Community Parking District that transports locals and workers within the Hillcrest business core to directly local restaurant hubs. The shuttle travels within the route (below) every 10-15 minutes. Operating Monday – Friday, 11:00am – 2:00pm, simply locate the nearest stop at your location using the handy map. Position yourself at the Lunch Loop sign in that location and a driver will be by within 10-15 minutes.

Urban Mo’s Shuttle
What better way to get around Hillcrest’s dining, dancing and drinking mainstays along and adjacent to University Avenue than with the Urban Mo’s summer shuttle service? Not only can you pick it up just a few blocks from Alcazar Court at Urban Mo’s, it’s free and makes the rounds of eateries in the Mo’s family: Hillcrest Brewing Company, Baja Betty’s, Gossip Grill and of course, Urban Mo’s. Track the extended golf-cart style shuttle’s hours and location at urbanmos.com/shuttle.

Big Bay Shuttle
Explore our beautiful Embarcadero and San Diego on the Big Bay Shuttle. Between the Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends, for only $3, visitors can hop aboard the Big Bay Shuttle for an eight-stop ride along San Diego’s Bayfront from Harbor Island to the South Embarcadero, near the San Diego Convention Center. The $3 ticket price allows riders on and off privileges for the entire day. Shuttles arrive at each stop every 15 to 20 minutes from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM on Sunday – Thursday and 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM on Friday and Saturday.

GoCar Tours
Called The Story Telling Car, GoCars are the world’s first GPS-guided mini tour car. Compact and bright yellow, these two-seaters allow you to make short trips or all day excursions while you’re experiencing the city. If you’d like to stop and exit the car to explore, the car “knows” where you and you can park anywhere you want for as long as you want – it will start talking as soon as you start to drive again.

Social Cycle Party Bike
Social Cycle is a 16-person bicycle, manually powered by its passengers and operated by a “captain”, that is ideal for just about every type of group outing/celebration – and perfect for bar and restaurant hopping in Hillcrest. It’s a fun, easy and safe way to socialize while enjoying local sights and being outdoors and there are pickup points in a variety of locations including Downtown, Little Italy, North Park and Pacific Beach in addition to Hillcrest. Don’t forget to make reservations in advance!

Pedagogo Electric Bikes
Centrally located along the bay, Pedego San Diego provides sales, rentals, bike service and more. Pedego Electric Bikes are perfect for the San Diego terrain. San Diego Fly Rides
San Diego Fly Rides is rated #1 on TripAdvisor for San Diego bike rentals, electric bike sales and service and bike tours of La Jolla and beyond.

Pedi Cabs in the Gaslamp Quarter
Pedicabs are a fun way to travel along downtown’s waterfront and in the Gaslamp Quarter and are especially useful if you’ve spent time roaming on foot and need a quick lift back to wherever you parked. Most pedicab drivers are happy to give you a guided tour, providing a unique way to explore San Diego’s downtown communities. Hail a pedicab from most any location on the streets of the Gaslamp.
