Best San Diego Beers & Breweries: A List of Local Favorites

You’ll have no struggle finding great beers and breweries in San Diego – in fact according to some, San Diego is the craft beer capital of the world! I think I’d settle for it being the craft brew capital of at the very least the west coast, and with more than 150 breweries, loads of beer-centric bars and even our own signature style – the super-hoppy West Coast-Style IPA – you won’t travel far from the bungalows to savor a flavorful pint. Try some of my favorites (and tell them Donna sent you):

Eppig Brewing
3052 El Cajon Blvd., Suite C, San Diego 92104
11 minute drive from Alcazar Court Bungalows
Eppig Brewing is an award-winning craft brewery which was originally established in the 1900’s as a brewing empire by brothers Joseph and Leonhard Eppig in Brooklyn, New York. The new Eppig team headed by Stephanie Eppig has resurrected its legacy 150 years later here in San Diego. Well behaved dogs and kids are welcome in the tasting room making this a family favorite.

Thorn Street Brewing
1745 National Avenue, Barrio Logan 92113
11 minute drive from Alcazar Court Bungalows
3176 Thorn Street, San Diego 92104
15 minute drive from Alcazar Court Bungalows
Thorn Street Brewing has been a prolific fixture in the San Diego North Park craft brewing community for quite a while, but has really made a huge leap in bringing brewery cool to a newly thriving cultural hub in South East San Diego: Barrio Logan. Make a visit to the barrio and experience Hispanic culture, food and street scene while partaking in a cold one at Thorn.

Modern Times
3000 Upas St (corner of 30th & Upas), San Diego, CA 92104
13 minute drive from Alcazar Court Bungalows
3725 Greenwood St., San Diego, CA 92110
13 minute drive from Alcazar Court Bungalows
Modern Times focuses on aroma-driven, complex, flavorful, session-style beers. They also brew many special release and one-off beer batches, and currently have a tank dedicated to beers fermented with Brettanomyces – an alternative yeast strain capable of producing wildly distinct flavors and resulting sour beers. The brewery was founded Jacob McKean, a beer geek, former Stone Brewing Co. employee and long-time homebrewer. In addition to their tasting rooms, Modern Times is distributed throughout Southern California.

Fall Brewing
4542 30th St, San Diego, CA 92116
13 minute drive from Alcazar Court Bungalows
Fall Brewing is a culmination of hungry humans starving for something they can commit to 110% and believe in…without having to answer to anyone. “We wanted to create a place where we wanted to hang out, drink the beers we wanted to make, and not stuff anyone’s pockets that weren’t deserving of it. So that’s what we did.” says company mascot and tasting room legend Eggmund. The rest as they say “is history” (in the making).

Societe Brewing
8262 Clairemont Mesa Blvd, San Diego, CA 92111
14 minute drive from Alcazar Court Bungalows
Societe’s tasting room, themed in 1900’s rusticness, is popular with local beer enthusiasts. Their offerings are grouped into 4 distinct subcultures, reflecting the various qualities of the brews: The Out West series is an exploration of the flavor of the hop as it pertains to San Diego and West coast brews. The Old World series is an homage to the classic beer styles and the traditional brewing history of Old World Europe. The Stygian series is a tribute to the river Styx: dark and deep, impactful and unforgettable, and Feral beers will be available in the future, aged and blended in barrels.

Pizza Port
1956 Bacon Street, Ocean Beach, CA 92107
15 minute drive from Alcazar Court Bungalows
135 N. Highway 101, Solana Beach, CA 90725 (original location)
27 minute drive from Alcazar Court Bungalows
Although it started as a pizza place in Solana Beach in 1987, is wasn’t long before co-founder Vince Marsaglia started dabbling with home brewing. The hobby took off and Pizza Port began offering craft-brewed beers in 1992. Pizza Port locations collectively have won over 91 medals/awards from the Great American Beer Festival… and they still make great pizza too!

Alesmith
9990 AleSmith Court, (formerly Empire Street), San Diego, CA 92126
18 minute drive from Alcazar Court Bungalows
Founded in 1995 and deeply rooted in the amateur and craft brewing communities, AleSmith ales consistently garner both national and international awards for their handcrafted ales inspired by the European classics. In 2015, AleSmith celebrated its 20th year in production by opening a new state-of-the-art brewery in Miramar and features an entirely new tasting room and brew system with the capability to pump out more than 100,000 barrels/year only two blocks west of the original location.

The Lost Abbey
2007 San Elijo Ave, Cardiff-by-the-Sea, CA 92007
26 minute drive from Alcazar Court Bungalows
Brought to you by the co-founder of Pizza Port, Vince Marsaglia and Port brewer Tomme Arthur, Lost Abbey has a distinct focus on interpretations of classic Belgian-style beers. Built on Vince’s original Belgian brewery vision, Lost Abbey dedicates itself to a flavor-first brewing philosophy where thinking outside the box — and equally as important — brewing outside the box are hallmarks.
